Select your image, click Edit image, then Remove background. Vids strips everything behind your subject and leaves a clean cutout on the canvas.
Two things that guide probably didn't tell you.
It isn't free. Background removal in Vids is a Gemini-gated feature riding on a paid subscription list, and Google's 30 May 2025 release note names Vids explicitly alongside paid editions only (Google Workspace Updates). And it's about images, not video footage. Every source below describes removing the background from a still image you've placed in your video. That distinction matters more than anything else on this page, so we've given it a section of its own.
Last verified: 15 July 2026 against Google Workspace Updates.
Key Takeaways
- The menu path: select the image on your canvas, then Edit image > Remove background.
- It's gated, not free. The feature "requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscription" (Google Docs Editors Help).
- Vids is named explicitly in Google's 30 May 2025 note, under the same paid-edition list as Slides and Drawings (Workspace Updates).
- Vids beats Drawings on tooling. Replace background and Expand background shipped to Slides and Vids only (Workspace Updates, 13 Aug 2025).
- Google Vids has over 7 million monthly active users (Google Workspace Blog, 22 Apr 2026), so plenty of people are hitting this menu.
How do you remove an image background in Google Vids?
It's a short menu trip, not a workflow. The path is Edit image > Remove background, and Google's help doc covers the identical flow across "Google Drawings, Slides & Vids" (Google Docs Editors Help, retrieved 15 July 2026). The one prerequisite is an eligible subscription. Without it, the menu item just doesn't render.
Here's the sequence.
- Open your video at vids.google.com and add your image to a scene if it isn't there already.
- Click the image once to select it. Nothing in the next step appears until an image is actively selected.
- Click Edit image in the toolbar above the canvas.
- Choose Remove background. Vids detects the subject and removes everything behind it.
- Check the cutout at full size. Hair, glass, and busy backgrounds are where these tools struggle, and a flaw you'd forgive in a slide gets very obvious when the shot holds on screen for six seconds.
One warning worth reading before you click. A removed background can't be reset with Reset image (Google Docs Editors Help). That's a genuine trap, because Reset image is exactly the button you'd reach for. Your routes back are Undo straight away, or version history later.
If Remove background isn't in your menu, don't go hunting through settings. It's a billing question, not a bug.
Citation capsule: To remove an image background in Google Vids, select the image and choose Edit image > Remove background. Google's help documentation covers this flow for "Google Drawings, Slides & Vids" and states the feature "requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscription" (Google Docs Editors Help, retrieved 15 July 2026).
Is the Google Vids background remover free?
No. Google's 30 May 2025 release note reads: "Remove the background from your images in Google Slides, Drawings & Vids using 20+ languages" (Google Workspace Updates). Vids is named right there in the announcement, and the eligibility list attached to it contains paid editions only. The support doc says the same thing in plainer words: you need an eligible subscription.

Read those two "inferred" rows carefully. Google announces who gets a feature and never who's excluded, so no Google document anywhere says "Business Starter doesn't get this." Those rows are our reading of the eligibility lists: Starter and Education Fundamentals simply aren't in them. Well-supported inference, not a quotation.
The Education Fundamentals row has independent support, at least. Google's Bett 2026 announcement gives the free K-12 tier "Gemini in Gmail" and nothing in Slides or Vids (Google Blog). That's consistent with what the release notes imply.
An honesty note on how firm this is. Our conclusion rests on documentary evidence, not a live test. We haven't sat at a free @gmail.com account and confirmed the menu item's absence in Vids. What we have is Google's own release note naming Vids, listing paid editions only, plus a help doc stating a subscription is required. That's strong. It isn't a hands-on test, and anyone claiming they checked every tier is guessing more than we are.

What image tools does Vids get that Drawings doesn't?
Two more. Removal itself is identical across Slides, Drawings, and Vids: same menu path, same eligibility list. The split shows up in the newer background tools. Replace background and Expand background shipped on 13 August 2025 to Slides and Vids only, skipping Drawings entirely (Google Workspace Updates).
| Feature | Google Vids | Google Slides | Google Drawings | Google Docs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remove background | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Replace background | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Expand background | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Requires paid subscription | Yes | Yes | Yes | n/a |
| Reset image restores it? | No | No | No | n/a |

Expand background is the underrated one here, and video is why. Vids works in a fixed frame, usually 16:9, and stock images almost never match it. Normally you crop and lose half your subject. Expanding the background instead of cropping the image solves a problem that barely exists in a slide deck and constantly exists in a video timeline. That's probably why Google shipped these two to Slides and Vids together while leaving Drawings out.
Expand background gets its own walkthrough in our guide to expanding an image background in Google Slides. The Drawings side of the split is covered in how background removal works in Google Drawings.
Does Google Vids remove backgrounds from video footage?
We can't tell you, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Every source on this page describes removing the background from an image. Google's 30 May 2025 note is explicit about it: "Remove the background from your images in Google Slides, Drawings & Vids" (Google Workspace Updates). The support doc sits under image editing too.
So if you've landed here wanting green-screen-style removal on a recorded clip or a webcam take, this feature isn't documented as doing that. We're not claiming Vids can't do it somewhere in its recording tools. We're saying no source we've verified says it does, and a confident yes or no from us would be invention rather than reporting.
This trips people up because "remove background in Vids" sounds like a video capability, and search results happily blur the two. In our experience the useful mental model is that this is the Slides background remover, surfaced inside a video editor, operating on the stills you drop into scenes. Logos, product shots, headshots, cut-out presenters. That's the job it does.
If footage-level removal is what you actually need, check Google's own current Vids documentation directly rather than trusting a blog post, this one included.
What if your plan isn't eligible?
Then use a free web tool and stop shopping for a workaround. There's no hidden free path inside Vids. The honest options are a round-trip through an external tool, an add-on that works inside your file, or an upgrade you probably shouldn't buy for one menu item.
- Free web tools. remove.bg, Photoroom, Adobe Express. Upload, download the transparent PNG, drop it into your scene. Free-tier terms vary and change, so check the tool's own pricing page. Canva's background remover is a paid feature, so it isn't a free route.
- A Workspace add-on. Works inside your file, skips the download folder.
- Upgrading. Only sensible if you wanted Business Standard anyway. Per-user, per-month, across a whole domain, for one button, is bad maths.
Volume decides it, not quality. One image a month? A free web tool is genuinely fine. Fifteen cutouts before a deadline is where the round-trip stops being trivial.
If the native button isn't on your plan and the round-trip is eating real time, Fractal Apps builds a Google Slides add-on that removes backgrounds without leaving your file, then you drop the result into Vids. Take a look. If you're on Business Standard or above, don't buy it. Open your Edit image menu first, because you're already paying for this.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove a background in Google Vids?
Select the image on your canvas, then click Edit image > Remove background. Google's help doc covers this flow for "Google Drawings, Slides & Vids" and notes it needs an eligible subscription (Google Docs Editors Help). The menu item won't appear on ineligible accounts.
Is the Google Vids background remover free?
No. Google's 30 May 2025 note names Vids alongside a list of paid editions with no free-tier exception (Workspace Updates). Free @gmail.com accounts need Google One AI Premium or Google AI Pro. Business Standard and above already include it.
Can Google Vids remove the background from video footage?
Not that we can source. Google's release notes and support doc describe removing backgrounds from images placed in Vids, not from recorded clips. We won't claim it does or doesn't handle footage without documentation. Check Google's current Vids help pages if that's your use case.
Why is Remove background missing from my Vids menu?
Almost always eligibility, not a bug. Google doesn't grey the option out with an upgrade prompt, it just doesn't render it. Free Gmail, Business Starter, and Education Fundamentals are the usual answers (Workspace Updates, 30 May 2025). Check your plan against the table above.
Can I undo a background removal in Google Vids?
Only with Undo or version history. Google states a removed background "can't be reset with Reset image" (Google Docs Editors Help), which catches people out because Reset image is the obvious button. Duplicate the image first if you want a safety net.
The Bottom Line
Google Vids removes image backgrounds, and the path is Edit image > Remove background. That's the whole trick, assuming your account qualifies.
Two caveats decide whether this page helped you. First, it's paid: the 30 May 2025 release note names Vids and lists paid editions only, with no free carve-out (Google Workspace Updates). Second, it's for images. Nothing we've verified covers stripping backgrounds out of video footage, and we'd rather say that than guess on your behalf.
With over 7 million people using Vids each month (Google Workspace Blog), a lot of them are about to click Edit image and find out which side of the eligibility list they're on. Go check yours. If the option's there, you're done. If it isn't, a free web tool handles occasional cutouts perfectly well, and only your actual volume should decide whether anything else deserves your money.
