Replace Background in Google Slides: What It Does and Who Gets It

published on 16 July 2026

Replace background is a text-prompt background swap built into Google Slides. You describe a new background, and Slides generates it behind your existing subject.

It shipped on 13 August 2025 to Google Slides and Google Vids, alongside a sibling feature called Expand background (Google Workspace Updates).

Almost nobody has written about it accurately. Most pages that mention "replace background" are actually describing Remove background, a different feature from March 2024, or they're describing slide backgrounds, which have nothing to do with images at all.

So this page does two things Google's release note does, and most blogs don't: it names the feature correctly, and it names the plans that get it.

Key Takeaways

  • Replace background swaps an image's background from a text prompt. It shipped 13 August 2025 to Slides and Vids (Workspace Updates).
  • It's not the same as Remove background, which cuts the subject out and shipped 8 March 2024 (Workspace Updates).
  • Eligible: Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, Gemini Education add-ons, Google AI Pro and Ultra (Workspace Updates, 13 Aug 2025).
  • Slides and Vids only. Not Google Drawings, not Google Docs.
  • Rollout ran from 28 July 2025 (Rapid Release) through 30 September 2025 (Scheduled Release).

What is Replace background in Google Slides?

It's an AI image-editing tool that swaps the background behind a subject in a photo you've already placed on a slide. Google announced it on 13 August 2025 under the heading "Replace and expand image backgrounds in Google Slides and Vids" (Google Workspace Updates). It's part of the Gemini image-editing set inside Slides.

The name is doing a lot of work here, so let's be precise about it.

Replace background does exactly what the two words say. Your subject stays. The background behind it becomes something else, generated from a description you type. That's the feature category, and it's what separates this from every other background tool Slides has shipped.

Here's the part worth flagging honestly. Google's release note confirms the feature exists, when it landed, and who's eligible. It doesn't publish a screenshot walkthrough or a canonical menu string for Replace background specifically. You'll find it among the image editing tools in Slides once you've selected an image on an eligible account. We're not going to invent a click path we can't source, and you should be suspicious of any page that gives you one with total confidence.

Citation capsule: Replace background is an AI background-swap tool in Google Slides. Google announced it on 13 August 2025 in a post titled "Replace and expand image backgrounds in Google Slides and Vids," shipping alongside Expand background to both products (Google Workspace Updates, 13 August 2025, retrieved 15 July 2026).

Remove vs Replace vs Expand: what's the difference?

Three different features, three different jobs, two different launch dates. Remove background shipped 8 March 2024 and cuts the subject out (Google Workspace Updates). Replace and Expand both shipped 13 August 2025 (Google Workspace Updates). People conflate all three constantly, and the naming really doesn't help.

Feature What it does Shipped Slides Vids Drawings
Remove background Cuts the subject out, leaving no background 8 Mar 2024 Yes Yes Yes
Replace background Swaps the background for a new one you describe 13 Aug 2025 Yes Yes No
Expand background Extends the existing background outward 13 Aug 2025 Yes Yes No

Pick by outcome, not by name.

Want a transparent PNG to sit over your own slide colour? That's Remove. It's the oldest of the three, it's in Drawings too, and it's the one every tutorial on the internet is actually about.

Want your subject somewhere else entirely? That's Replace. The background isn't deleted, it's substituted for a scene you describe in words.

Image too small for a full-bleed slide? That's Expand, which stretches the existing scene outward rather than swapping it. We've covered that one separately in how Expand background works in Google Slides.

Note the Drawings column. Remove background works in Google Drawings, but the release note announcing Replace and Expand names Slides and Vids only, with no mention of Drawings (Google Workspace Updates, 13 Aug 2025). If you've been using Drawings as your image workbench, that habit stops working for the two newer tools.

Who gets Replace background in Google Slides?

Paid tiers, starting at Standard. Google's 13 August 2025 release note names the eligible group directly: "Business Standard and Plus; Enterprise Standard and Plus; Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on; Google AI Pro and Ultra" (Google Workspace Updates). Find your plan below.

Your plan Replace background? Source
Workspace Business Standard Yes 13 Aug 2025
Workspace Business Plus Yes 13 Aug 2025
Enterprise Standard Yes 13 Aug 2025
Enterprise Plus Yes 13 Aug 2025
Gemini Education / Education Premium add-on Yes 13 Aug 2025
Google AI Pro Yes 13 Aug 2025
Google AI Ultra Yes 13 Aug 2025
Free personal @gmail.com No (inferred, see below) Our reading of the 13 Aug 2025 list, not a Google statement
Workspace Business Starter No (inferred, see below) Our reading of the 13 Aug 2025 list, not a Google statement
Education Fundamentals No. Gets "Gemini in Gmail" only Bett 2026

Read those last three rows carefully, because they're a different kind of claim. Google never announces exclusions. Release notes list who gets a feature and stop there, so no Google page anywhere says "Business Starter doesn't get Replace background." Those rows are our inference from the plans' absence in the eligibility list, not a quotation. It's a reasonable inference. It's still an inference, and you deserve the distinction.

The app coverage matters just as much as the plan. Replace background is Slides and Vids only. Not Drawings. Not Docs. Docs has never appeared in any release note for any of these three background features.

Google's related help documentation covers Gemini image generation and editing in Slides and Vids (Google Docs Editors Help), and the older cutout tool has its own page stating it "requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscription" (Google Docs Editors Help).

Citation capsule: Replace background in Google Slides requires a paid plan. Google's 13 August 2025 release note names eligibility as "Business Standard and Plus; Enterprise Standard and Plus; Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on; Google AI Pro and Ultra" (Google Workspace Updates, retrieved 15 July 2026).

When did Replace background roll out?

Between 28 July and 30 September 2025, depending on your domain's release track. Google ran the standard two-track rollout: Rapid Release domains started getting it from 28 July 2025, and Scheduled Release domains received it from 14 August through 30 September 2025 (Google Workspace Updates, 13 August 2025).

Milestone Date Track
Rollout begins 28 July 2025 Rapid Release domains
Feature announced 13 August 2025 Public release note
Rollout begins 14 August 2025 Scheduled Release domains
Rollout completes 30 September 2025 Scheduled Release domains

That timeline explains a specific kind of confusion. Some people had this in late July, before Google had said a word about it publicly. Others waited until the end of September on an identical plan. Same feature, same subscription, two months apart, purely because of a release-track setting an admin chose long ago.

Why does that matter now, in 2026? Because rollout is long finished. If you're on an eligible plan today and you don't see it, waiting isn't the answer. The window closed on 30 September 2025.

What if you don't have Replace background?

Then your realistic options are a different plan, a different tool, or a different approach. There's no free tier of this feature and no waiting list. Google's eligibility list from 13 August 2025 hasn't been widened to free accounts, Business Starter, or Education Fundamentals (Google Workspace Updates).

Here's the honest menu.

  • Cut out, then place. Remove the background with any free web tool, then drop the PNG onto a slide over a background image you chose yourself. It's two steps instead of one prompt, and you get precise control over the result.
  • Use an external AI editor. Prompt-based background swapping isn't unique to Slides. Plenty of standalone tools do it, at the cost of an upload-and-download round-trip.
  • Upgrade, but only if you already wanted to. Business Standard buys you a whole tier, not one button. If Replace background is the entire business case, the maths almost never works.
  • Skip it. Plenty of good decks use a clean cutout on a solid colour. A generated background is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

In our experience building tools around this workflow, the cutout-then-place route holds up better than people expect. You pick the background yourself, so you know exactly what you're getting. No prompt roulette.

If you're trying to work out where your plan actually stands, our breakdown of Google Slides background removal on free plans has the full tier-by-tier table across all of these features.

If your plan doesn't include the native tools and the upload round-trip is eating your time, Fractal Apps builds a Google Slides add-on that removes image backgrounds without leaving your deck. Take a look. If you're already on Business Standard or above, you may not need it. Check your image editing tools first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Replace background in Google Slides?

It's an AI tool that swaps the background behind a subject in an image on your slide, generated from a text description you write. Google shipped it on 13 August 2025 to Slides and Vids, alongside Expand background (Google Workspace Updates). It requires a paid plan.

Is Replace background the same as Remove background?

No. They're separate features with separate launch dates. Remove background cuts the subject out and shipped 8 March 2024 (Workspace Updates). Replace background substitutes a new background you describe and shipped 13 August 2025 (Workspace Updates).

Which plans include Replace background in Google Slides?

Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons, plus Google AI Pro and Ultra (Google Workspace Updates, 13 August 2025). Free @gmail.com accounts, Business Starter, and Education Fundamentals don't appear on that list, which we read as excluded.

Does Replace background work in Google Drawings or Google Docs?

No. Google's release note names Google Slides and Google Vids only (Workspace Updates, 13 August 2025). That's a real difference from the older Remove background tool, which does work in Drawings. Google Docs has never appeared in a release note for any of these three features.

When was Replace background released in Google Slides?

Google announced it on 13 August 2025. Rapid Release domains began receiving it from 28 July 2025, and Scheduled Release domains from 14 August through 30 September 2025 (Google Workspace Updates). Rollout is complete, so an eligible plan without the feature isn't simply waiting.

The Bottom Line

Replace background is real, it's been shipping since August 2025, and it's one of the least accurately documented features in Google Slides. Most of what you'll read about it online is actually about Remove background, a different tool from a different year.

The short version: Replace swaps a background from a text prompt, Remove cuts the subject out, Expand stretches the scene wider. Replace and Expand are Slides and Vids only. Remove also works in Drawings.

Eligibility starts at Business Standard or Enterprise Standard, and covers Gemini Education add-ons plus Google AI Pro and Ultra. Free accounts, Business Starter, and Education Fundamentals aren't on Google's list.

So go look. Select an image in a deck and check your image editing tools. If Replace background is there, you're already paying for it. If it isn't, your plan is the reason, and no amount of waiting changes that.
